About Dyscalculia

Dyscalculia is a specific learning difficulty characterised by impairments in learning basic arithmetic facts, processing and performing accurate and fluent calculations. Research indicates that around 5% of the population may have dyscalculia. It may occur alongside other specific learning difficulties, such as dyslexia, Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD) or Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD).

Typical symptoms may include:

  • Poor sense of number and estimation
  • Weak mental arithmetic skills
  • Difficulty counting backwards
  • Slowness in performing calculations
  • Forgets procedures, especially those with several steps
  • Lack of strategies to compensate for the lack of recall, reverts to counting
  • Use of avoidance strategies
  • Anxiety about mathematics generally
