About Dyscalculia
Dyscalculia is a specific learning difficulty characterised by impairments in learning basic arithmetic facts, processing and performing accurate and fluent calculations. Research indicates that around 5% of the population may have dyscalculia. It may occur alongside other specific learning difficulties, such as dyslexia, Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD) or Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD).
Typical symptoms may include:
- Poor sense of number and estimation
- Weak mental arithmetic skills
- Difficulty counting backwards
- Slowness in performing calculations
- Forgets procedures, especially those with several steps
- Lack of strategies to compensate for the lack of recall, reverts to counting
- Use of avoidance strategies
- Anxiety about mathematics generally
