About Dyslexia
The word ‘dyslexia’ comes from Greek and means ‘difficulty with words’.
Dyslexia is about information processing. People with dyslexia have difficulty processing and remembering information that they see and hear. This can affect both the acquisition of literacy skills and learning generally. It is a lifelong and often inherited condition that affects around 10% of the population. It can affect anyone. No two people will have exactly the same strengths and weaknesses.
Typical indicators include:
- Slowness in mastering phonic awareness and knowledge
- Difficulty breaking down and sounding out words
- Having to reread text
- Spelling weakness, particularly in free writing
- Putting down thoughts onto paper
- Finding it hard to sequence events
- Processing information
- Remembering and following instructions
People with dyslexia may have strong visual, creative and problem-solving skills. Many very successful people have dyslexia.
